What is a Notary Public

An English and Welsh notary or notary public is a specialist lawyer who assists people with documents that are to be used abroad such as declarations and powers of attorney. Notaries are regulated through the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury and are a distinct legal profession to solicitors. Most notaries are solicitors who have undergone years of advanced training in order to practise as a notary. 

Only a notary can assist you wish notarising documents, so it is important that if have been told your document needs to be notarised that you instruct a notary.

Common reasons why a person may need a notary are to assist with:

1. Notarising an identity document such as a passport;

2. Administering a declaration for abroad. A declaration may be needed in connection with a deceased’s estate, opening a bank account, identifying yourself to overseas registry bodies.

3. Notarising a power of attorney. Powers of attorney can be used to allow someone to act on your behalf.
